Ryde Hospital Redevelopment Master Plan

Ryde, New South Wales

Reimagining the Ryde Hospital Precinct

Studio STH has been engaged by Health Infrastructure NSW to deliver the Ryde Hospital Redevelopment for the Northern Sydney Local Health District. Located in Eastwood, this multi-staged project aims to expand and enhance healthcare services while maintaining operational continuity. It includes Decanting, Enabling, Early, and Main Works phases, with careful planning to minimise disruption to patient care.

The site presents both challenges and opportunities, including bushfire risk from the nearby Blue Gum High Forest and the presence of two state-significant heritage buildings—Denistone House and its former stables. The redevelopment must also maintain seamless connections to existing rehabilitation and mental health services to the northeast, despite high asset density and limited available space for new development.

Studio STH’s involvement began with a comprehensive site analysis and asset condition assessment, forming the basis for a strategic asset management and demolition plan. This enabled the creation of a new, purpose-built facility while allowing uninterrupted healthcare delivery. Clinical services will be progressively transferred into the new facility, after which redundant structures will be removed, revealing Denistone House along the main street frontage. The two-stage masterplan was developed in collaboration with the Local Health District to preserve clinical capability throughout.

The redevelopment will introduce state-of-the-art services including an Emergency Department, Medical Imaging, Pathology, Pharmacy, Inpatient Units, Administration, and Education Spaces. This will elevate the hospital’s role delineation from Level 3 to Level 4/5. A holistic, patient-centred design approach integrates architecture, landscaping, interiors, and a Connection to Country strategy, respecting the site’s heritage while delivering modern healthcare infrastructure
