Rockhampton Cardiac Hybrid Theatre

Rockhampton, Queensland

Rockhampton Hospital is the main referral hospital for Central Queensland, offering medical services to a population of about 230,000 throughout the Rockhampton, Gladstone, the Capricorn Coast and Emerald communities. The new Cardiac Hybrid Theatre will provide Central Queenslanders access to enhanced cardiac services closer to home, minimising patient travel to Brisbane by at least 80 per cent, whilst support the growth of a sustainable cardiology workforce.
Studio STH and design partners Phillips Smith Conwell have been engaged by Paynters to provide Schematic Design review and validation, Detailed Design, Tender Documentation and contract administration services.

The expanded Cardiology services include:
  • Cardiac Hybrid Theatre, enabling coronary angiograms, coronary stents and pacemaker implantation
  • Pre-op holding and recovery with 6 recovery bays
  • Cardiac Investigations Unit with 8 assessment and diagnostic spaces
  • Transoesophageal echocardiography (TOE) procedure room
  • Cardiology Inpatient Unit with 6 new beds, increasing the total number to 12
  • Clinical and administrative support spaces

To enable this development, a series of staged demolition, refurbishment and decant works across 5 levels of the Medical and Clinical Services Buildings are required to minimise disruption in a live hospital environment. This staging strategy involves re-planning and refurbishment of:
  • Ophthalmology outpatient clinic
  • Gynaecology and Antenatal Outpatient Clinics
  • Paediatric Outpatient Clinics
  • Cardiac Investigations Unit
  • Cardiac Inpatient Unit
  • Administrative support across multiple levels

Studio STH and PSC are working closely with Paynters and Central Queensland Hospital and Health Service clinicians to deliver this life-changing project for the people of Central Queensland.
