University Hospital Geelong Master Plan

Geelong, Victoria

Studio STH have undertaken the design and delivery of all the major projects delivered on the University Hospital Geelong dating back to 2000, including redevelopment of the Cancer Services, Emergency Department, Medical Imaging Services Main Entry, Administration Functions, Pharmacy, Out-patients and a major Inpatient Development.

Despite the scale of development in recent years, the combination of population growth in the catchment area and ageing assets has suggested that further capital investment will be requirement in the near future. To this end Barwon Health commissioned Studio STH to develop a new campus Masterplan for the University Hospital Geelong.

The Masterplan study consolidates various lead-in studies including service demand, existing asset conditions and the development priorities. The dense and fully developed nature of the Northern part of the campus suggested a major pivot of the campus to the South. Not only would this strategy provided adequate development space , it would also allow the existing campus to remain operational during the construction phase.

The Masterplan contemplates and facilitates a series of staged projects including:
  • A new Womens & Children’s Wing
  • A new Mental Health Facility
  • A new Emergency Department
  • Expanded Acute Services including a new Peri-operative and Interventional Suite
  • Expanded Inpatient Accommodation
  • Expanded Ambulatory Services
  • Expanded Clinical Support Services
  • Expanded Non-clinical Support Services, including a new Loading Dock and
  • Service Yard
  • Multi-deck Carparking

Significantly the Masterplan is capable of delivering this major expansion to the clinical service profile while progressively addressing:
  • The connectivity of the campus with its immediate neighbours and the City of Greater Geelong
  • Accessibility
  • Way-finding through the re-development of the Main Entry and by overlaying an internal circulation pattern that unlocks and re-connects previously inaccessible areas of the campus.
  • Minimising travel distances
