Counties Manukau Health - Specialised Rehabilitation Centre

New Zealand

The Specialised Rehabilitation Centre is a strategic project for Counties Manukau Health (CMH), whose vision is to provide specialised rehabilitation services from a state-of-the-art new facility located next to the Manukau SuperClinic.

The scope includes an inpatient 60-bed rehabilitation facility, outpatient and ambulatory facilities, offering a range of specialities spanning all specialised rehabilitation (neurological conditions, stroke, spinal cord injury, brain injury, multi-trauma, amputation, general rehabilitation), with the goal of encouraging independence and participation, particularly following a serious illness or injury.

The facility will also include support to outreach satellite clinics and provide tele-health consulting rooms with a range of outdoor rehabilitation spaces.

The design providing future proofing and flexibility of use for changing models of care. For instance, the ground floor therapy space has the same footprint as the Inpatient Unit (IPU) level so that it can be easily be repurposed into an IPU if the need arises.

The layout of the IPU level considers opportunities for passive observation and external views. It also allows visibility of outpatients via internal courtyards, so inpatients can see the journey of outpatients recovery. The design also encourages rehabilitation to take place anywhere, i.e. the inclusion of an open therapy stair connecting each level, as circuit walking track, with rest spots and the inclusion  of landscape terraces for outdoor activities, to help motivate patients for a faster and more autonomous recovery.
