Western Centre for Health Education and Research

St. Albans, Victoria

The Western Centre for Health Research & Education represents a strategic investment in the future of integrated healthcare, education, and cancer treatment in Melbourne’s west. Designed by Studio STH in collaboration with the University of Melbourne, Victoria University, and Western Health, this $40 million facility brings together teaching, training, and translational research under one roof to improve patient outcomes and workforce capability.

A key driver of the design was the need to attract and retain skilled clinicians and researchers while fostering inter-institutional collaboration. By consolidating lecture theatres, seminar spaces, simulation laboratories, and academic offices in a purpose-built, five-level facility, the building creates an active learning environment that mirrors real-world healthcare settings. This immersive approach strengthens the pipeline of healthcare professionals trained specifically to meet the region’s needs.

The cancer treatment component—anchored by a 4-bunker Radiation Therapy building and supported by a new 128-bed inpatient facility—was designed to ensure advanced care is accessible locally, reducing the burden of travel for cancer patients. These services are co-located with education and research functions, creating a hub where clinical care is informed by the latest medical insights.

Central to the design is a naturally lit atrium that penetrates deep into the building’s lower floors, promoting visual connectivity and well-being for occupants. Instead of a single monolithic form, two distinct activity pavilions frame the atrium, maximising daylight and external views while creating intuitive circulation paths. This layout supports both focused research and spontaneous interaction, reinforcing the centre’s goal of fostering a truly collaborative health precinct.
