Grafton Base Hospital Redevelopment

Grafton, New South Wales

The Grafton Base Hospital Redevelopment is a transformative project designed to enhance healthcare capacity, improve service delivery, and provide state-of-the-art facilities for the community. The NSW Government has committed $263.8 million to this redevelopment, ensuring a safe and modern healthcare environment that meets the growing and changing needs of the Clarence Valley region.

The redevelopment will:
  • Deliver upgraded infrastructure to accommodate the increasing healthcare demands of the local population.
  • Support contemporary models of care to enhance patient outcomes and staff efficiency.
  • Strengthen the network of health services across the Clarence Valley region.
  • Improve the co-location of services to optimise patient access and streamline staff workflows.
  • Provide culturally appropriate facilities that respect the needs of Aboriginal communities and healthcare workers.
  • Establish a modern and safe working environment to attract and retain skilled healthcare professionals, ensuring sustainable service delivery
  • The project will significantly enhance hospital capacity with the construction of a new three-storey building featuring:
  • An expanded Emergency Department and Emergency Short Stay Unit.
  • Enhanced Medical Imaging services, including MRI capabilities.
  • A new inpatient unit to accommodate growing demand.
  • An upgraded Day Surgery and Operating Suite, incorporating two additional operating theatres.
  • A future-ready space for maternity services relocation, along with a Special Care Nursery.

A key focus of the redevelopment is delivering a culturally sensitive, contemporary healthcare facility through a staged brownfield approach. The project will ensure continuity of care by maintaining live hospital services while minimising the need for decanting. Engineering services will be carefully coordinated to support both current operations and future expansion needs.
