This project involved the submission for the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne with a new greenfield hospital to be designed in the parkland adjacent to the existing facility. The proposal was developed around the event space which is the heart of the complex providing a vibrancy and visual connection that welcomes, distracts, promotes feelings of personal control, reduces anxiety, creates a fun atmosphere and presents direct wayfinding clues for all of the primary journeys and destinations the newly arrived patient/family need to make. The vibrancy and connectivity are continued for those travelling to the ambulatory care and inpatient wards above by continued exposure to the activities in the event space volume from the glass lifts. These “events” both active and static also provide reverse wayfinding cues for those leaving the hospital. A public private partnership consortium In association with Grimshaw architects.
