Mercy has become one of the most innovative, technologically advanced and efficient tertiary referral women’s hospitals in Australia. Mercy is dedicated to providing specialist women’s health services, with a new obstetric/maternity services, gynaecological and surgical services, including a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and clinical support. The facility has 75 postnatal, 25 gynaecological, 12 birthing suites and a 60 cot Neonatal nursery. The new hospital allows for the largest capacity of births (6000 a year) in any one facility in Victoria. Planning of the facility centres on collocation of related departments to provide an integrated service, continuity of care, a familiar environment and consistency of staff. A major innovation is a large area dedicated to the Neonatal Intensive Care cots, partitioned in a pinwheel open plan arrangement, that provides more space for parents to attend the bedside while improving privacy and enhancing staff observation. The Interior Design reflects the mission of the Mercy, of a welcoming environment that promotes the wellness of women. Joinery and wall colours are soft and neutral, with timber and richer colours used at departmental entries, and receptions.
