The design brief for this bayside hospital was to expand the current inpatient accommodation without reducing occupancy and hospital operations during construction. The solution was a lightweight waved façade that reflects the ocean views. The three level extension was constructed over the existing building, using an unprotected steel structure, a first in healthcare in Australia. The development included 17 beds Paediatrics and 25 bed Birthing Suite/Post Natal Unit on one floor, and two 30 bed inpatient units for Cardiology, CCU, Renal and Respiratory on the upper level. A new main entry and foyer was also created, providing a contemporary new image to the hospital. This development was innovative on a number of levels. The Obstetric Unit was planned with the Birthing Suite and Post Natal Unit in one unit, allowing swing bed capacity. The Paediatric Unit catered for the Family Centred Care Model, with accommodation for families in each room.
