Redevelopment of an existing facility into a modern 810 bed Level 6 major quaternary/tertiary hospital, with a new curved 9 level tower block of polished white concrete and zinc providing cardiovascular, renal, women’s and neonatal care, critical care, day surgery and research/education facilities. An atrium with curved glass walls and suspended staircases is an architectural highlight of the project and floods surrounding areas with natural light. It also signifies a separate Women’s and Children’s Entry and acts as a wayfinding tool through the new building. The services include a 22 operating theatre complex, 50 bed Intensive Care Unit, NSW’s only liver and renal transplant unit, leading edge diagnostics, teaching and research, and laboratory facilities. A second cyclotron (the fourth in Australia) was added to RPA with a complete PET suite. The women’s and children’s component of the redevelopment included 9 Delivery rooms, 4 Birth rooms, 22 cot Neonatal ICU / SCU Nurseries, 30 bed Ante-post natal unit and OPD. The result is a hospital that now promotes flexibility, patient centred care and staff efficiency. In association with Daryl Jackson Architects. Completed in 2003.
