Casey Hospital Expansion Project, Berwick, VIC

STH undertook the masterplanning, design and documentation of this significant expansion of the Casey Public Hospital, in Berwick, Victoria. Originally working as part of the Plenary Health consortium, and then commissioned by VHHSBA, the scope of works of the 13,000 m² expansion includes a new 6 storey tower of 128 inpatient beds, 12 intensive care beds, and 20 day/short stay beds. A new operating theatre (6 theatres) and CSSD connects back into the existing hospital, with a refurbished day surgery of 2 additional theatres. Refurbishment of the existing pharmacy, pathology and back of house were also included.

The project provided the opportunity to create a new image and arrival sequence to the hospital, with a new foyer and new canopy. A shimmering aluminium canopy of pink/red hues connects back to the existing brickwork and the local vernacular, and signifies the new entry and extends into the foyer ceiling. The signature element at the entry is the Monash University Education Hub, which provides a student hub with lecture theatre, social hub spaces and tutorial rooms for medical and nursing students. The design showcases a folded façade with a café under. The tower is deliberately simple in its form with curtain wall glass, to provide a backdrop to the Education Hub and canopy.
